Prepared for a precursor-free eruption ? The case of Mt Nyiragongo (DR Congo)

Under this provocative title, we will see how the monitoring infrastructure was set up in the challenging natural and political environment of North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, based on the lessons learned from previous eruptions at Nyiragongo. We will also examine why the May 2021 eruption of Nyiragongo took everyone by surprise, despite the use of operational real-time ground-based networks and automatic space-based monitoring methods.
Finally, we will reflect on the lessons to be learned from the May 2021 eruption and the subsequent dyke that intruded at a very shallow depth beneath the city of Goma and the gas-rich Lake Kivu, and consider how these lessons may be applied to future eruptions at Nyiragongo and possibly other volcanoes.
Sous ce titre provocateur, nous verrons comment l’infrastructure de surveillance a été mise en place dans l’environnement naturel et politique difficile du Nord-Kivu, en République démocratique du Congo, sur la base des enseignements tirés des précédentes éruptions du Nyiragongo. Nous examinerons également pourquoi l’éruption du Nyiragongo de mai 2021 a pris tout le monde par surprise, malgré l’utilisation de réseaux terrestres opérationnels en temps réel et de méthodes spatiale automatique de surveillance.
Enfin, nous réfléchirons aux leçons à tirer de l’éruption de mai 2021 et du dyke qui s’est ensuite propagé à une très faible profondeur sous la ville de Goma et le lac Kivu riche en gaz, et nous examinerons comment ces leçons peuvent être appliquées aux futures éruptions du Nyiragongo et éventuellement d’autres volcans.
