Position description :
Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist position in the Tectonic, Erosion and Relief Evolution (TERE) Team of the CRPG-CNRS geosciences laboratory, at Lorraine University (Nancy), in France. The position is part of a collaborative project funded by the French national agency of research aimed at advancing our quantitative understanding of the dynamics of rivers channel and valley widening in mountain landscapes.
The 2 years post-doctoral position aims at defining physical models of lateral and vertical abrasion. The post-doctoral scientist will have the opportunity to work with experimental annular flumes that permit to reproduce the lateral and vertical erosion of bedrock rivers as a function of various substrate, hydrodynamic or sediment load conditions. Within the instrumented flumes, several types of experiments are feasible to conduct parametric studies, as complete as possible, of abrasion by impact and scratching of moving particles. On the basis of his/her experimental results and previous experiments, the post-doctoral scientist will aims at defining physical models of lateral and vertical abrasion that could be up-scaled in numerical models of bedrock channel evolution or landscape evolution model. It is propose to validate this up-scaling by conducting field measurements (terrestrial Lidar) and instrumentation (erosion sensors) in natural rivers of Nepal that crosses the frontal Himalaya.
He or she will work in close collaboration with J. Lavé and will be assisted by engineer and technicians (for experimental work or numerical optimization). In addition, the project is in collaboration with two other research groups with relevance to geomorphology and landscape evolution in Toulouse (GET) and Rennes (Geosciences Rennes) : the selected candidate will be encouraged to interact in the framework of these collaborations to foster scientific discussion and global project advancement.
Qualifications :
Candidates will hold a PhD in Earth sciences (geomorphology, surface hydrology, geophysics) or in granular Physics with research interests at the interface between geologic processes and hydrology, experimental work.
Some experience in numerical modelling is preferred, and experience in PIV or PTV would be welcome. Abilities to work in an international environment, to communicate and to write scientific papers are expected. Although prior knowledge of French is not mandatory, spoken and written English proficiency is needed.
How to apply :
Please contact Dr. Jérôme Lavé (jlave@crpg.cnrs-nancy.fr) with a cover letter, CV, research statement with postdoc application in the subject line. Applicants should mention the names and contact information for three references. Applications will be reviewed on rolling basis until the position is filled. Starting date can be from April to October 2022.
For additional information, feel free to contact Dr. Jérôme Lavé.
